Recently rescued rain spider. It took almost a week for the wasp venom to wear off and while there are still signs of paralysis this one seems in better shape than the previous one.
He’s taking water, but no food just yet.
Good morning!
Me and my pal soon after my morning jog.
Ems was behind the camera.

I can’t help it. I realise it is all part of nature, but If you saw what the Pompilid wasps do to these spiders you might appreciate why, when the opportunity presents itself, I will don my Thunderbirds Are Go persona and ”leap into the fray”.

Sod’s Law suggests that if you did I would probably be slated on Twitter for ”interfering” in the natural order of things.
The Aussies just bowled South Africa out for 89 at the Wanderers in the first T20 after posting 197.
Off-spinner, Ashton Adar took 5 wickets including a hat-trick!
5 wickets in a T20!!!

No. Not just a bad day.
It’s one reason why Steve Smith is the highest paid cricketer in the world.
SA are currently in what is euphemistically termed a ”rebuilding phase”.
We also lost the recent test series to England, and the One day AND the T20.

I know – rats with a furry tail. . .but at least they’re cute! (Well, until one gets into your house and insists on rolling acorns around in the floor joists, often when there’s company in the house. . .).

Umm, yes. Hubby performed a catch-and-release operation with a live trap, and I swear it was the same damned one that found its way back here the next summer!
As spiders go, I must say that one IS a little National Geographic-worthy, as JZ says. .. 🙂

Are there any natural predators to the wasps in the area? Here, birds have been doing a good job of tackling the wasp/hornet population. I’ve seen more spiders around my fruit trees and berry patches.
LikeLike
Have no idea, offhand. Good point.
But we have loads of birds at our spot so if these are the wasp’s natural enemies he’s certainly running the gauntlet when he’s chasing after spiders.

If people have bird feeders out, then that might be why they’re not chasing wasps. Also, I’ve seen a guy on YouTube who removes hornet/wasp nests. He takes the larvae from the nests and feeds them to his pet chickens. That also might cut down on the population if they’re becoming a nuisance.

I do have a bird feeder and this never crossed my mind as being a distraction.
You may be on to something.
The pompilids are solitary wasps and hunt their prey on the ground so perhaps they are not so easy for the birds to track?

That might be it.

The seem to devour everything else they grub for so they probably take a few wasp lavae as well.

Ark, just last night sitting outside waiting for a good friend to arrive, this neighbor’s little miniature Chihuahua—not on a leash—scurried out into the parking lot toward the patch of grass—where many pets do their bowel movements—but yapping, barking and going on and on like it was the toughest little BIG beast since King Kong! Well, within 4-5 seconds the resident Red-tailed hawk that lives among our skyscrapers and tall buildings/car-garages SWOOPED down from on high straight at the little loud Chihuahua running around like a fool!!! Guess what happened next Ark…

Not really … however, if the bird did not snatch the dog there will be a fair number of relieved readers.

Ahh, well then in that case this somewhat insensitive man fascinated with Nature and the “Natural Order of things” (to borrow one of your phrases Sir) including all things beautiful and brutal, believes he can share some details and perhaps dilute or omit other graphic details. I think that should be just fine for your Granny-ratings and Family Viewing blog. Yes? 😈

😄 Hey now! Don’t kill (or defame) the messenger for simply reporting what NATURE exhibited!!! I was merely a witness to the provocative event. 😉
The owner of the miniature Chihuahua suddenly jolted out from behind a wall toward the famished Red-tail hawk—who I am quite sure had 2-3 fledglings to feed herself!!!—and to her very tiny canine with a big yappy bark saying “look at me, look at me everyone”… and the HUGE hawk did a last second turn and up into the tree right above her prey and approaching owner. Yes, she picked up her delusionally arrogant pet looking up in caution and made a B-line straight for her front door.
See… all ended well, for most presumably. The red-tail hawk’s young ones though might just starve to death. So for WHOM did this Nature story end well for? 🤔

Btw Ark, I just responded to your reply to me over on WeeFlee’s blog. I’ll go post it over on your other blog-post, but I doubt Robertson will allow it. Your points and my additional points to you he will not like. However, his incessant moderating this time will be a dilemma to either allow or disallow. hehehe 🤭

Watching the Liverpool v. West Ham match Ark. And Salah, or should I say Fabianski, just tied up the score. Ugh, ouch, pain, and humiliation!!! Every goalkeeper has done that in their career at least once… and man O man does it HAUNT YOU for the rest of your life!
My last mistake/error like that—between the wickets—kept my team and teammates from advancing out of our region playoffs into the National Tournament Finals. 😢 It never ever goes away. And yes, my university has that game on video.

I felt for the bloke. While I enjoy the win the manner in which it came was not the nicest.
Every time there is mention of how close Liverpool came to winning the title in 2014 Gerard’s slip is invariably mentioned.
And yet, the bloke was a rock for the team.

Ark,
Did you catch the UEFA Champs game between Chelsea v. Bayern? In the 88th – 89th minutes when the outcome was firmly sealed, the German Bayern fans sang the English anthem or some English hymn or something. Was that in very poor taste or even sporting, especially in these volatile times of rising European “Populism,” hyper-nationalism, racism, etc, etc? If anything I thought those fans singing that were BEGGING for fights, riots, or at least fanning the flames of humanity’s WORST depravity and hate.

Sorry, Prof. Missed the game . I was very tired and went to bed early.
Haven’t even checked the result yet.
If they were singing then perhaps it was because of Brexit?

Just spoke to my son about the singing. He says they were singing their version of ”Its coming home” in reference to the the Champions League Cup and English fans who often sing something similar when they are on the continent.
