  1. Dunno if I mentioned it, but I saw two white-eyes the other day. That brings the whole winter’s total to (wait for it!) … 2.

  2. love these shots. The best I can come up with is our first crow of the season, and a turkey vulture, and a Pileated woodpecker. Big day. it must be migration time. =)

    1. Pileated Woodpeckers are a rare sight here. They’re quite gorgeous though. I just never seem to have my camera when they show up.

      1. As I understand it, PWs require several acres to nest and breed in, usually old growth forest. We never see more than one at a time, but you can hear them hooting at one another in the spring and fall. Nothing quite like it, is there. I read somewhere that one of their alternate names is the ‘goodgod bird’ and that sums it up perfectly.

        1. Every few years we have one swoop down into one of our trees. I am always amazed at the size and beauty of them. I’m always on the lookout for them when I take the family for a hike through the woods.
