Leading you up the garden path.

  1. Mantids fascinate me. I recently watched a nature documentary that included a masterful videographic segment. First, it showed a preying mantis grooming itself on a tree limb. Then, it cut-away to a short piece on how deadly and efficient preying mantises are as predators. Finally, the video returns to the grooming mantis and… a chameleon’s tongue suddenly snatches the unsuspecting creature from the tree limb! Moral of the story: no matter how big and bad you might be, there’s always someone or something that can take you out – lol!

              1. Well damn, that was easy: The basic principle is simple: female praying mantises have 6 abdominal segments while males have 8. The final segment of the female is much larger than the others while the male has several small segments towards the end of the abdomen. If you have to count the segments, you should look at the underside of the mantis.
